There are various designations in the Indian police department which include:

Superintendent of Police (SP)/ Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP)

These officers have to be in charge of a Special Commando Battalion or an Armed Police force as a Deputy Commander or manager a big urban area in the district.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)/ Assistant Commissioner

This is the job of a state police officer who is a part of the provincial police forces.

Inspector of Police/ Circle Inspector

The person in this position is the officer in charge of any police station in a specific locality or region. The post of an inspector is superior to that of a sub-inspector.

Assistant Inspector of Police

Sub-Inspector of Police

He is the lowest ranking officer who is generally the first investigating officer and is able to file a charge sheet in court under IPS rules and regulations.

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police

He is a Non-Gazetted police officer who ranks above a police constable although his rank is lower than that of a sub-inspector.

Police Head Constable

He has to help the sub-inspector of the office in taking care of daily activities in a police station.

Police Constable

In the department of police in India, this is the lowest rank. Most of the responsibilities of a police constable is to abide by the orders of the head constables and head of the police stations.

The salary structure of a Police officer in the country is like this:

  • A police constable draws rupees 7000 per month.
  • A head constable takes home anywhere between 5200 to 20,200 rupees per month.
  • A sub-inspector or assistant Sub Inspector gets a salary of about 9300 to 34800 rupees per month.
  • A circle inspector gets about 15,600 to 39,100 rupees p.m.
  • An Assistant Commissioner or DSP gets about 15600 to 39300 rupees per month.
  • An ASP or SP gets anywhere between 70000 to 109203 rupees per month.
